Philemon

Fitting that a letter to a master (Philemon) regarding his runaway slave (Onesimus) should follow Paul's instructions regarding slavery! Onesimus was apparently a runaway slave who had had a change of heart, presumably after spending time with Paul in prison and learning about Jesus. He was returning to his master, either of his own volition or Paul's strong recommendation, and the letter was to ensure that he was received as a "beloved brother". Paul was appealing to Christian morality, which is what eventually brought down the institution of slavery.

Tomorrow's reading: Phil. 2:12-4:23
