I think today's reading can best be summed up by Paul's charge in verse 4:1 when he says to Christians, "I beg you to live a life worthy of your calling". The remainder of this section listed bullet points on how to achieve this "worthy" lifestyle. Our lives should not look like those of the non-believing world around us nor should they resemble our own lives before salvation. The book of James tells us that "faith without deeds is dead", meaning that a professed Christian who bears no external resemblance to Christ, is probably not a true believer at all. Our lives should be a reflection of our hearts, and if we do not act like someone who is in love with the God of the universe, the logical conclusion is that we are not. None of us will do so perfectly, but all of us should bear an increasing resemblance to the One we claim to follow.
Tomorrow's reading: 5:15-6:24; Col. 1:1-23
