In the Temple details listed for today's reading, Ezekiel mentions animal sacrifice. This seems out of place, given that Christ's death on the cross eliminated the need for atonement though blood sacrifice. His death served that purpose once and for all. So why would provisions need to be made in a future Temple, for animal sacrifice?
After much reading on the subject, the consensus of opinion is that animal sacrifices in the Millennial kingdom will be a ceremonial remembrance of Christ's sacrifice on the cross. This is similar in nature to our observance of the Lord's Supper. The communion ceremony has no power to save, but serves to connect us to the sacrifice that saves. Old Testament sacrifices never had the power to save either. They were always about restored fellowship with God in response to sin. Animal sacrifices in the New Millenium will not detract from what Jesus accomplished on the cross because they have nothing to do with eternal salvation. Since the future Temple will be built by and for the Jews, it stands to reason that it would honor the traditional Jewish observances. Even so, this is a limited engagement, as the New Temple appears to be tied to the Millenium, which is the 1000 year reign of Christ on earth before the final battle.
