Israelites Return to Jerusalem

In the original Hebrew Old Testament, Ezra and nehemiah are combined into one book. Ezra, who was a priest and scribe, is considered to be the author of both. The book of Ezra is divided into two sections, with chapters 1-6 outlining the return of the first group of 50,000 Jews who set about the task of rebuilding the temple. Ezra was not a part of this group that was led by Zerubbabel and was likely not yet alive at that time. There is about a 100 year lapse between chapters 6 and 7, during which time the events of the book of Esther took place. Chapter 7 details the repatriation of a small remnant of Jews, less than 2000, left in Persia (Babylon.) This group was led by Ezra who was later assisted by Nehemiah. This later section of the book deals with the reformation of the Jews themselves.

Tomorrow's reading: Daniel 10-12:13; Ezra 4:24-5:1; Haggai 1:1-15
