Genealogies

We dropped back to Chronicles to pick up the tribal lineage given for most of the twelve tribes of Israel. Ten of the tribes, those hailing from the northern kingdom, exiled to Assyria 150 years before the captivity of Judah, and are now called the "lost tribes". Unlike Judah and benjamin, who were exiled in Babylon and returned to Judah after their release by Cyrus of Persia, the northern kingdom never re-established itself. There is no record of what became of those tribes, though there are many speculations and legends.Of the entire nation of israel, God was careful to preserve the one tribe, Judah, that had been prophesied to bring forth the Messiah.

tomorrow's reading: 1 Chron. 8:29-9:1; Daniel 4:1-37; Ez. 40:1-37
