Jerusalem had been utterly decimated by the Babylonians, which is probably why the exiles returned to outlying towns, (where some semblance of order may have remained), as opposed to attempting to resettle in Jerusalem. With the Spiritual renewal initiated by Nehemiah and Ezra, the people must have felt called to reclaim God's city in addition to the restoration of the Temple. Today's reading offered a list of those who decided to rebuild the Holy City. I kinda skimmed...
