It seems Jeremiah was intensely persecuted because of his unpopular pronouncements from God. He begins today's reading with frustration aimed at God's seeming unwillingness to punish they people who are tormenting him. But instead of offering an explanation for this iniquity, God essentially tells Jeremiah that he "ain't seen nothin' yet". The people would grow more wicked in the face of his preaching and would not repent. His own family would turn against him. And judgement was certain. Jeremiah had the unpleasant task of foretelling a hideous future with no hope of changing it. God even goes so far as to tell Jeremiah not to pray for Judah anymore. Their fate had already been sealed. As Jeremiah wraps up his well-deserved pity-party, he asks that the Lord punish those who have persecuted him and that He spare his life. The Lord's response is meant to slap Jeremiah back into submission, for his focus had shifted from God's message to his own distress.
Tomorrow's reading: Jer. 16-18:23, 35:1-19
