Baruch was evidently Jeremiah's assistant...something like a secretary. He was called upon to take down the message from the Lord and deliver it to the people of Judah because Jeremiah himself was restricted from the Temple. He may have been imprisoned at the time or banned from traveling or from speaking in the Temple.
You probably noticed that the chapters we read for today were out of order. We'll be going back to pick up the chapters that were skipped. There are many chronological oddities about the book of Jeremiah. Some scholars suggest that a later editor rearranged the chapters for some unknown purpose while others believe that the chapters are grouped according to theme as opposed to a timeline.
