God gave the people what they wanted. They wanted a big hero at the helm, and God selected Saul, who was very "kingly" in appearance; "the most handsome man in Israel, head and shoulders taller than anyone else in the land". At this point in the story, Saul was a humble man, recognizing his personal obscurity among the Israelites. Clearly, he must have lacked prominence, as many of his tribesmen said, "Can anyone become a prophet, no matter who his father is?" Nevertheless, he was annointed by Samuel, and wouldn't we all love to have such clarity regarding major life changes?! "When you leave me today, you will see... and then they will say... and then they will give you... and then you will meet... and they will be doing... and after all these signs have taken place..." Saul could have no doubt at the end of the day, that he was God's man for the job. And to seal the deal, God gave him a new heart. God then equipped Saul to gain victory in his first military campaign, which earned him the approval of the Israelites. He has the endorsement of Samuel, the confirmation of countless signs, the power of the Holy Spirit upon him, and the admiration of the people. What could possibly go wrong? Stay tuned...
