Talk about a filibuster! Steven was asked if the accusations against him were true and he replied with a complete history of the Jews. His sermon offended the Sadducees, (who were an elite religious sect serving alongside the Pharisees in the Sanhedrin, where Jewish law was interpreted), and brought about his stoning. Of note is the fact that Saul, later Paul, was present at this execution, giving his approval to it. This is his first appearance in Scripture.
