Persecution
We know that Christians at this time in history endured great persecution, as this was the era of the gladiators and the practice of throwing Christians to the lions. So when Paul speaks of being stoned, whipped, beaten, imprisoned, hunted, and slandered...this is the context. Though we do not face persecution of this sort, we should be encouraged by his example of contentment and joy despite his circumstances.
