We don't know how much time had elapsed between the incident where the disciples had insufficient faith to cast out the demon from the little boy. But Jesus is now en route to Jerusalem and has sent his disciples ahead of him to prepare the towns along His route. When they returned from this excursion, after an undetermined amount of time, they exclaimed, "Lord, even the demons obey us when we use your name!". So there had clearly been some progression in the disciples' confidence in Jesus and His ministry. They were now able to cast out demons! Jesus had revealed His messiahship gradually and had patiently allowed His disciples to grasp His deity before bringing them to the events that would transpire during Passover week in Jerusalem.
