Isaiah's Servant Song

The book if Isaiah is broken into three distinct sections. The first 35 chapters deal directly with Judah's present predicament with the threat of Assyria. Chapters 36-39 create a historical bridge, discussing the reasons for the future babylonian captivity. Chapters 40-66 deal with the Babylonian captivity and aftermath, including the regathering of people and rebuilding of the city and temple of Jerusalem. In this section, Isaiah also goes into details about the future deliverance of Israel through a Messiah. Chapter 42 is known as the "Servant Song" and was recognized long before the time of Jesus as a reference to the Messiah. In fact, almost all ancient Scripture translations in both Hebrew and Aramaic, insert the word "Messiah" into the opening sentence "Behold, my servant Messiah..." though our text does not. The remaining sections of our reading go into the future destruction of Babylon and victory of Israel, which is yet to come.

Tomorrow's reading: Isaiah 44:6-48:11
