Song and Psalm of Moses

This is poetic prophecy regarding the nation of Israel, as God had revealed to Moses the disobedience and discipline that would ensue after his death. This song indicates that Moses was a gifted poet, making the authorship of Psalm 90 feasible. Some scholars question his authorship because his lifetime was so much earlier than the rest of the Psalm writers. Skeptics assert that Psalm 90 was written by David in tribute to Moses. But I don't see why it would be difficult to believe that this poem was preserved, along with the rest of Moses' writings, and deemed most appropriate for inclusion in the book of poems (Psalms). Regardless, it is a psalm full of wisdom about the brevity of life and what we should strive for in the 70 or 80 years we are allotted. It is pointless to chase happiness because even the "best years" will be filled with pain and trouble. That's life! We are to chase holiness, not happiness, and make the most of our time here as an opportunity to grow in wisdom (and Christ-likeness).

Tomorrow's reading: Deuteronomy 33-34; Joshua 1-2

  1. As I was reading this I was wondering how the Israelites felt when it was read to them. Basically being told they were not going to obey God, that they would lose everthing and have it worse than they had it in Egypt. what did they feel? Denial? Entitlement? Anger? Maybe that might happen to my children but not to me? How many times have I thought "I know this is not what God would want, but I just have to say this ONE thing...at least I am not going on and on" It's a slippery slope as they say, and denial sure helps the run.
